US grants more than 25 million dollars to Angola to fight covid-19

The United States of America (USA) will grant more than 25 million dollars to Angola. According to the announcement made by Wendy Sheman, US Assistant Secretary of State - who was speaking at the launch of the US government's initiative for Global Access to Vaccines, Global VAX - a financing line will be opened, in the amount of 25,036.000 of dollars, directed to the fight against covid-19.

Providing support to professionals who are at the forefront of fighting the pandemic and helping to acquire more doses of vaccines are also part of the objectives of the initiative, which defines cooperation with the Ministry of Health to stimulate immunization against the disease in the country.

This new investment, according to the US official, will increase total support for the response to the pandemic in the country to around 39 million dollars. She added that in recent decades, her country has granted more than 630 million dollars to help fill the gaps as well as provide support to the Angolan health system, writes Angop.

Regarding the pandemic, Wendy Sherman recognized the success of Angola, exemplifying that in the capital 77 percent of the eligible population received at least one dose against covid-19.

In addition to covid-19, the US secretary also mentioned that actions to combat malaria continue.

Cited by Angop, she also admitted that this success can be extended to other provinces, with the help of the Global VAX project.

Carolina Cerqueira, Minister of State for Social Affairs, also mentioned by Angop, took the opportunity to thank the Global VAX initiative, considering that this project will add to the country's efforts to strengthen access to vaccination.

The official indicated that with the support of the US government, "with the donation of six million doses", it was possible "to vaccinate 3.8 million people with two doses of the Pfizer vaccine".

She also indicated that since the start of the vaccination process, in March of last year, 12.2 million citizens have been vaccinated with the first dose, and more than six million have already received the second dose.
