Africa's death toll rises to 3790 in over 129,000 covid-19 cases

The death toll in Africa from covid-19 has increased to 3790 in the last 24 hours, an additional 94 in more than 129,000 cases of infection in 54 countries, according to data on the continent's pandemic.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the death toll has risen in the last 24 hours from 3696 to 3790 (+94), while infection cases have increased from 124,482 to 129,565 (+5083).

The total number of recovered patients rose from 51,095 to 53,414 (+2319).

North Africa is the region most affected by the disease on the continent, with 1746 dead and 38,898 infected with the new coronavirus.

West Africa records 678 deaths and 32,079 infections, while Southern Africa accounts for 601 deaths and 29,460 cases, almost all in a single country, South Africa (27,403).

East Africa reports 397 deaths and 14,833 recorded cases and in Central Africa there are 368 fatalities in 14,295 cases.

Six countries - South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria and Ghana - concentrate about half of the infections by the new coronavirus in the continent and more than two thirds of the deaths associated with the disease.

Egypt is the country with the most deaths (845) and has exceeded 20,000 infections (20,793), followed by Algeria, with 630 fatalities and 8,997 infected.

South Africa is the third with the most deaths (577), continuing to be the continent's country with the most covid-19 cases (27,403).

Morocco totals 202 fatalities and 7643 cases, Nigeria reports 259 deaths and 8915 cases, while Ghana has 34 deaths and 7303 cases.

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Guinea-Bissau has the most infections, with 1195 cases, and records eight deaths.

São Tomé and Príncipe accounts for 458 cases and 12 deaths and Cape Verde has 390 infections and four deaths.

Mozambique counts 233 infected patients and two dead and Angola has 77 confirmed cases of covid-19 and four dead.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 1043 cases and 12 deaths, according to Africa CDC.
