Covid-19: Africa's death toll rises to 2764 in over 84,000 cases

The death toll from covid-19 in Africa rose to 2764 on Monday, with more than 84,000 infected in 54 countries, according to the latest statistics on the continent's pandemic.

According to the African Union's Disease Control and Prevention Center (Africa CDC), in the last 24 hours, the death toll has risen from 2704 to 2764, while those infected with the covid-19 virus have gone from 81,307 to 84,586.

The total number of recovered patients increased from 31,078 to 32,477.

North Africa remains the region most affected by the disease on the continent, with 1422 dead and 27,282 infected with the covid-19.

West Africa has passed 500 deaths (509) and there are 24,165 infections, while Southern Africa accounts for 283 deaths and 16,812 cases, almost all concentrated in a single country, South Africa (15,515).

Six countries - South Africa, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria and Ghana - concentrate about half of the infections by the new coronavirus in the continent and more than two thirds of the deaths associated with the disease.

Egypt is the country with the most deaths (630) and has 12,229 cases, followed by Algeria, with 548 deaths and 7019 infected.

South Africa became the third with the most deaths (264), continuing to be the country of the continent with more cases of covid-19, with 15,515 infected.

Morocco totals 192 fatalities and 6870 cases, Nigeria has 182 deaths and 5959 cases, while Ghana has 29 deaths, but it is the fifth country with the most cases (5735).

Among the Portuguese-speaking African countries, Guinea-Bissau is the one with the most infections, with 990 cases, and registers four deaths.

Cape Verde has 328 infections and three deaths and São Tomé and Príncipe has 240 cases and seven deaths.

Mozambique has 137 infected patients and Angola has 48 confirmed cases of covid-19 and two died.

Equatorial Guinea, which is part of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), has 522 positive cases of infection and six deaths, according to Africa CDC.

Globally, according to a report by the AFP news agency, the covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 313,500 deaths and infected more than 4.6 million people in 196 countries and territories.

More than 1.6 million patients were considered cured.
