Cambéu: Angolan turtle protection project bidding for international competition

A project to protect turtles on the beaches of Benguela, called "Cambéu", was selected for an international competition, promoted by Sea Turtles. Cambéu" is the only Angolan project to participate in the contest, which is composed of a list of 40 initiatives dedicated to the preservation of animal life.

Despite considering it an honor to participate in this contest, Luz Le Corre, co-founder of "Cambéu", said that, more than that, this will be an opportunity to raise the name of Angola in the world. She also admitted that if the project wins the contest it may have new means to help these animals.

"We are the only project competing for Angola and if we win, our idea would be to buy a four-wheeled motorbike to patrol more kilometres of beaches and protect more turtles. If there's any money left, we'll print the support materials to raise awareness among the population not to hunt this animal, and about the importance of protecting them," she told Opaís newspaper.

Luz Le Corre admitted that "Cambéu" still has a great shortage of material, but for now the priority is to find a means of transport to patrol the beaches. The motorbike would help volunteers to collect eggs more quickly from risk areas - usually surrounded by predators or hunters.

The contest is a 5,000 dollars prize. From the list of 40 organisations, only one wins, the one with the most votes.

The vote on the contest is already active and runs until June 1. Anyone can vote: just go to www.seaturtles.org/vote and choose the organization you like the most. Each person can only vote once.

The non-profit project was created six years ago and since then has returned more than 10,000 turtles to the sea.
