Lusophone countries more than doubled imports of Chinese products in March

Exports from Portuguese-speaking countries to China grew by 0.7 percent in March and imports of Chinese products more than doubled over the previous month, official figures released this Friday indicate.

In March, Portuguese-speaking countries exported an additional 0.7 per cent to China, with a total value of 7.5 billion dollars, according to the Chinese Customs Service.

The Portuguese-speaking countries imported Chinese products worth 3.09 billion dollars, up 128.7 percent from February, reported the same figures available on the website of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and the Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macau).

In March, Brazil continued to be China's main partner within the Portuguese-speaking bloc, with trade of around 8 billion dollars, up 15.39 percent on last month.

In that month, Brasilia exported products worth 5.4 billion dollars to Beijing, down 6.83 per cent. However, Brazil purchased goods worth 2.5 billion dollars from China, an increase of 133.13 percent.

Angola is in second place in the Portuguese-speaking 'ranking' with trade with China worth 1.95 billion dollars, a positive change of 31.91 percent.

Luanda sent goods to Beijing worth 1.83 billion dollars, up 29.86 percent on last month, and bought goods from China worth 111 million dollars, up 78.44 percent.

Trade last March between China and Mozambique was 158 million dollars, up 43.72 percent compared to February 2020.

In the first quarter of the year, exports from Portuguese-speaking countries to China fell 5.15 percent, compared to the same period of 2019, to 23.2 billion dollars, according to the same source.

Imports of Chinese products to Portuguese-speaking countries, also in the first three months of the year, fell 5.08 percent to 8.7 billion dollars.
