Angola ready to ratify new orthographic agreement

Angola quer agora adoptar o novo acordo ortográfico. De acordo com Teté António, ministro das Relações Exteriores, o país está a discutir esta possível adesão com os membros da comunidade dos Países de Língua Portuguesa (CPLP).

:

The ruler, who was speaking this Monday at the opening of the colloquium on the Portuguese language, revealed that the language is for the country "a factor of development, as the President of the Republic recently said".

Cited by Angop, Teté António also highlighted the fact that it is necessary to analyze how to stimulate the Portuguese language in education, teaching and other policies.

The new orthographic agreement was expected to enter into force in January 1994, however, it was necessary for all members of the CPLP to ratify the document, something that did not happen. Only Portugal in 1991 and Brazil in 1995 ratified the document.

Given the failure, the document was eventually amended: it lost the date of entry into force and allowed Timor-Leste to join the new agreement. In addition, the document now provided that ratification could only be carried out by three members for the Agreement to enter into force.

The new agreement provides for the inclusion of the letters 'k', 'w', and 'y' in the alphabet, the elimination of silent consonants such as the word "action" or "director", among others.

Mozambique, Portugal, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe and Timor-Leste have already ratified the document.
