Portuguese Language Day is celebrated in Luanda with virtual shows

World Portuguese Language Day is celebrated this Tuesday in Luanda with two shows in virtual format, promoted by Camões - Centro Cultural Português, announced the institute.

In the morning, at 10:30 am, the contemporary dramaturgy show “Leitura Assistidas”, promoted by Klaus Novais and Dílson Maria, will take place on the virtual stage, with the participation of an Angolan author (Fernando Carlos), a Brazilian author (Grace Passô) and a Portuguese author (Ricardo Cabaça).

At 5 pm, the music, theater and dance show “A Língua Portuguesa Entre Nós”, promoted by José Teixeira, will be attended by two dancers, four actors and two musicians.

The activities will be transmitted through the Facebook.

During this week, a digital campaign on the Portuguese language takes place through the publication of quotes by Portuguese-speaking authors and framing texts about this language on the same Facebook page.

At a global level, Camões - Cooperation and Language Institute, in partnership with the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO, in English) and the ONU News, organizes the commemorative event of the World Day of the Portuguese Language, in virtual format, with other entities, and that will be available, starting at 12:00 (from Lisbon and Luanda) on the Youtube page of Camões Institute and shared on social networks Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

The celebrations begin with the transmission of messages from the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, from the Heads of State of Portugal and Cape Verde, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and Jorge Carlos Fonseca, respectively, from the Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa, CPLP's executive secretary, Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles, and Portugal's permanent representative to UNESCO, Sampaio da Nóvoa.

Video testimonies from writers, sportsmen, scientists, artists and other individuals will also be released, with emphasis on José Ramos-Horta, Carminho, Manuel Alegre, Adriana Calcanhoto, Maria Manuel Mota, Mia Couto, Germano Almeida, Flora Gomes, Milton Hatoum, Fernando Pimenta and José Tolentino Mendonça.

To close the initiative, a concert will be broadcast with Aline Frazão (Angola), Ivan Lins (Brazil), Teófilo Chantre (Cape Verde), Manecas Costa (Guinea-Bissau), Stewart Sukuma (Mozambique), João Gil (Portugal), Tonecas Prazeres (São Tomé and Príncipe) and Zé Camarada (Timor-Leste) which will remain available and publicly accessible on YouTube.

The 5th of May was proclaimed by UNESCO as World Day of the Portuguese Language, and the organization recognized “the important role that the Portuguese language has in the preservation and dissemination of human civilization and culture”.

The Portuguese language is currently spoken by more than 265 million people.
