Cabindan Armed Forces declare unilateral ceasefire with immediate effect

The General Staff of the Cabinda Armed Forces (FAC) announced late this Thursday that a unilateral ceasefire had been declared, with immediate effect, for a period of two months, throughout the territory of the province of Cabinda.

:

The statement says that the decision, in agreement with the political leadership of the Front for the Liberation of the State of Cabinda – Armed Forces of Cabinda (FLEC-FAC), comes after internal consultations with the political leadership of FLEC and “is part of a clear desire to create a climate conducive to serious dialogue with the Angolan authorities to put an end to the conflict in Cabinda”.

“FLEC-FAC’s decision also follows the announcement of the UNITA [National Union for the Total Independence of Angola] initiative and the proposal it said it would present to the Angolan parliament,” the statement said.

FLEC-FAC is committed to creating a favorable environment that does not affect the development of UNITA's initiative, considering that it could be “an opportunity to take a step towards dialogue”.

According to FLEC-FAC, this step aims to “reaffirm its commitment to the peaceful resolution of the conflict in Cabinda and demonstrate its openness to dialogue, in strict respect for the right to self-determination of the Cabindan people”.

“FLEC-FAC reserves the right to respond militarily to any provocation by the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) in the territory of Cabinda and to react vigorously when the population of Cabinda is the victim of acts of violence and repression”, the note highlights.

The temporary suspension of hostilities begins, but “in the absence of concrete results from the Angolan party UNITA, the ceasefire will end at 11 pm on Saturday, June 14, 2025”, determines FLEC-FAC.

UNITA announced last March that it will submit a draft resolution to parliament to “demand the immediate and unconditional end to military hostilities” in the Angolan province of Cabinda and “the immediate start of peace negotiations.”

The UNITA parliamentary group maintains that Cabinda's civil society, the protest movements and the population want and defend inclusive dialogue to resolve Cabinda's political-military and historical problem.

The Cabinda State Liberation Front – Cabinda Armed Forces (FLEC/FAC) has been demanding for several years the independence of the territory of Cabinda, a province in the north, from where a large part of the country's oil comes, evoking the Treaty of Simulambuco, of 1885, which designates that territorial part as a Portuguese protectorate.
