Rainfall in Luanda has doubled this year compared to the same period in the previous year and the capital should continue to experience heavy rainfall in the coming days, sometimes accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms, an official source said Thursday.

"Compared to the month of April 2022, the rains this year have increased in frequency. If we look at what is the occurrence of these intensities, last year they occurred twice in April, but this week we are already in the fourth rain that falls with the same intensity," an official from the meteorological institute told Lusa.

According to the coordinator of the Department of Meteorological Surveillance of the National Institute of Meteorology (Inamet), Gomes Muanza, the current parameter of heavy rains falling over Luanda was already foreseen in his daily update chart.

Luanda, the Angolan capital with close to 10 million inhabitants, spread across nine municipalities, this Thursday has been experiencing heavy rains since dawn, with flooded houses, impassable streets, falling trees and submerged public and private institutions among the consequences.

The scenario of torrential rains has been dragging on since last week, having so far caused nine officially confirmed deaths, and Inamet says that moderate or locally heavy rains are expected over the next 24 hours, in Luanda and in some provinces, especially the coastal strip and the interior of Angola.

"The north coast of the country, from Cabinda to Cuanza Sul, are the most affected regions, as well as a part of the province of Uíge and the forecasts for tomorrow also show rains with the same intensity for the next 24 hours", said Gomes Muanza.

The provinces of Uíge, Malanje and Cuanza Norte and part of Lunda Norte are also expected to register precipitation.

Gomes Muanza, meteorological engineer, also noted that the rains that occur in Luanda, often accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms, are caused by convective clouds (charged with energy that later cause discharges in the atmosphere).
