Antonica Baptista: young, mechanic and the only woman to “take care” of the National Police helicopters

Her name is Antonica Notícia Baptista and she is the only woman to work as a helicopter mechanic in the Aviation Unit of the National Police of Angola (PNA).

The young woman, already effective at the corporation, says that her passion for aviation emerged at the age of 20, after seeing an advertisement for a ticket contest for candidates for the mechanical pilots course posted at the Instituto Médio de Topografia where she was finishing high school.

"I love what I do, it has always been my passion to work in the technical area, which is why I took a degree in petroleum engineering," a mechanic told the National Police website.

The subordinate officer reveals that not even the transport difficulties that were experienced at the time prevented her from going to the Higher Institute of Police and Criminal Sciences (ISCPC), in order to register for the vacancy of mechanical pilot.

"It was very difficult to reach the place, because at the time there were few taxis to the south zone, we had to go by truck and, likewise, return by truck. Thank God I was selected for the second phase and we did the tests at the Air Force Nacional, where I was once again the only lady, in a universe of 15 boys who left for the Federative Republic of Brazil, in order to attend the aircraft maintenance course at the National Agency of Brazilian Civil Aviation (ANAC)", she said.

"After our return to the country, we attended the Basic Police course, this in 2009, at the Practical School of Police", she added.

Asked about the technical procedures to be carried out before a helicopter takes off, Antonica explained that normally the components are analyzed so that approval is given for the flight to take place. "The letter from the previous day is checked, if any anomaly has been reported, if so, it is checked whether it has been resolved, after that, a 360-degree check-up is carried out on the device and after that, the survey is carried out of the flight", reported the specialist, recalling that, in terms of civil aviation, maintenance has levels and lacks certifications.

Under the heading "April Jovem", dedicated to young people who stand out in the corporation, the mechanic also commented on the issue of female emancipation, expressing the desire to one day see a woman occupy the position of general commander of the PN or even minister of Interior. "Demotivation should not be an element for us not to make our dreams come true. If we have love and dedication, things will happen", she guaranteed.
