UNITA says 20 years of peace are still marked by several setbacks

UNITA considered this Monday that, after 20 years of peace, the country is witnessing a decline in the indicators of the democratic rule of law, corruption and an increase in poverty and unemployment, especially among young people.

In a declaration alluding to the day of peace and national reconciliation, the Standing Committee of the Political Commission of the União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola (UNITA) also points out other negative points, such as "the vertiginous rise in the prices of basic food products, corruption endemic and systemic, the degradation of moral and civic values and the abuse and violation of human rights".

According to UNITA, the peace achieved in 2002 was a primary programmatic objective of the party's founding leader, Jonas Savimbi, "which was consolidated by the XVI UNITA Annual Conference in March 2001".

"To this end, Dr. Savimbi took several diplomatic initiatives and spared no physical and other sacrifices, to the point of donating his own life", stresses the UNITA statement, which also pays "patriotic tribute to the memory of all children of Angola who, throughout their history, have paid the price of peace with their lives".

The Standing Committee of the UNITA Political Commission emphasizes that the peace memorandum signed in 2002, after the death in combat in the same year of Jonas Savimbi, was intended to bring better expectations to Angolans, in all areas, however, "after 20 years, the balance is mitigated, as Angolans are experiencing a serious economic, financial and social crisis".

"The Standing Committee of the Political Commission of UNITA, in the name of the truth, it is up to you, today and here, to say that it has fully fulfilled what it was supposed to do within the framework of the Peace Agreements and that it has completely transformed it into a democratic political party, in the light of the its founding manifesto, the Constitution, and the law of the parties, and its practice demonstrates this", emphasizes the document.

In its position, the Standing Committee of the UNITA Political Commission expresses that it will continue to dialogue with the Government so that it fulfills the pending Peace Agreements, namely the social inclusion of ex-combatants and the return of their material heritage.

In view of the national and international challenges, the Standing Committee of the Political Commission of UNITA congratulated the leader of the party, Adalberto Costa Júnior, "for his belief in dialogue and for his numerous initiatives" that culminated in the meeting with the President, on the 1st of this month, encouraging him "to persist in this path that is absolutely salutary and exemplary for the country's citizens and institutions".

Adalberto Costa Júnior, Abel Chivukuvuvku, general coordinator of the political project PRA-JÁ Servir Angola, and Filomeno Vieira Lopes, leader of the Bloco Democrático, were congratulated "for the enlightened initiative" of creating the Frente Patriótica Unida (FPU), which UNITA believes is "the right electoral platform leading to the alternation of political power under the conditions of the current Constitution of the Republic of Angola".

"To appeal to all the living forces of society and citizens in general to join the FPU, so that together we can lead the much-needed and vital alternation for all Angolans", urges the statement.

The document calls for all citizens over 18 years of age to register, urging the executive to consider extending the period of electoral registration that may still be deemed necessary.
