Low student enrollment and parental concern mark reopening of preschool education

The return of pre-school students, in Luanda, this Monday, to classrooms was marked by low attendance by students and the concern of parents about the preventive measures adopted to stop covid-19.

A year after preschool classes were suspended due to covid-19, students who returned to school were happy to see their friends again, but parents expressed some concern about the reopening of classrooms.

This is the case of Pedro Miguel, a student at school No. 83, who, speaking to Jornal de Angola, said he was happy to see his classmates again, even though they were the few who showed up.

"I'm happy to see my classmates again, but, unfortunately, we can't give hugs, as before, due to covid-19," he stressed.

However, Pedro Miguel's contentment was not reflected in the thoughts of his mother who said she was concerned about the biosecurity conditions adopted to prevent covid-19.

"My son is very restless, he hardly stays in one place. The time we live in demands extra care," she said.

The Nelito Soares Children's Center also welcomed the pre-school students, but the reception was not as expected: the adhesion to the classes was low and, according to Jornal de Angola, on the first day of classes only six students showed up at school.

Domingas Gomes, the center's director, revealed that most of the parents who come to the center are to learn about the conditions of prevention against covid-19: "The center has water, soap and bleach, for the children's hygiene. The parents guarantee to bring their children", he said.

With a capacity to accommodate 500 children between the ages of 2 and 6, the director revealed that there are currently 400 students enrolled in the center.

"Usually, during the school year, only 280 to 300 children come. This year, due to the pandemic, we are not sure if we will reach the usual numbers," said the director, who assured that all the center's assistants have already been vaccinated with the first dose of the vaccine.

The timid adhesion was also noted in the Santa Catarina College, which, according to the Jornal de Angola, only received three children on the first day of classes.

The concern of parents was also mirrored in this school: parents and guardians decided to pick up their children earlier to avoid gatherings.
