Covid-19: Africa with 243 more dead and 9360 infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded an additional 243 deaths associated with covid-19 in the last 24 hours, for a total of 118,133 since the start of the pandemic, and 9360 new cases of infection, according to the most recent official data on the continent.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of infected people in the 55 member states of the organization is 4,437,846 and the number recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours is 9231, to a total of 3,975,424 since the start of the pandemic.

Southern Africa continues to be the most affected region, with 1,944,631 infected and 61,322 dead associated with contagion with the disease. In this region, South Africa, the country hardest hit by the covid-19 on the continent, records 1,567,513 cases and 53,757 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area, with 1,321,112 infected and 38,106 fatalities.

East Africa accounts for 574,548 infections and 10,440 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 450,742 and that of deaths is 5929.

Central Africa accounts for 146,813 cases of infection and 2,336 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, has 12,778 deaths and 217,186 infected, followed by Tunisia, with 9825 deaths and 287,061 cases of infection. Morocco records 505,949 cases of infection and 8952 deaths associated with covid-19.

Among the countries most affected are also Ethiopia, with 3,392 fatalities and 243,631 infections, and Algeria, with 3,160 dead and 119,805 infected.

Regarding Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique recorded 800 deaths and 69,228 cases, followed by Angola (563 deaths and 24,518 cases of infection), Cape Verde (193 deaths and 20,627 cases), Equatorial Guinea (106 deaths and 7505 cases) , Guinea-Bissau (66 deaths and 3712 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (35 deaths and 2271 cases).
