Authorities estimate losses of 1 billion in transport

The Ministry of Transport estimated this Monday that the sector is experiencing losses of revenues amounting to US $ 1 billion, due to the pandemic caused by the new coronavirus, and needs to reinforce the treasury.

The situation was reported by the Secretary of State for Transport, Carlos Fernandes Borges, at the end of a meeting that the tutelage held with companies, industry associations and commercial banking.

According to the official, the projected estimates point to losses of more than $ 1,000 million, noting that the calculations were based on "variables and assumptions that are difficult to fix due to uncertainties".

"The calculation and estimation of revenues and losses depends on how long this will last, nobody knows, it depends on what the recovery rate will be", said Carlos Fernandes Borges.

In an exercise that he considered conservative, the Secretary of State added that the estimates point to a recovery, in the next six or nine months, of "revenues that may amount to 40 or 50 percent of the total revenues until December".

"Therefore, it is a very strong loss that we have to find alternatives and solutions", he stressed.

The economic impact of the covid-19 pandemic on companies in the transport sector was the basis for the meeting that took place in the capital, with a view to finding solutions to ensure the balance of companies.

"We are very focused on identifying solutions, they go through identifying mechanisms to support the treasury that can relieve companies from this low revenue," said Carlos Fernandes Borges.

For financial support to the sector, public and private, the Ministry of Transport estimated that, in the "preliminary calculations" already made, companies need more than 200 million dollars.

"It is a preliminary number, but it has to do with work that has already been done and what we want is for the bridge to be made later with the banking sector, which is why we invited commercial banking," he explained.

A volume of investments of 100 million dollars, mainly for the private sector, is part of the estimates of the ministerial body, because it is a sector "in which there is a lot of informality".

"We saw here an opportunity to look at the road sector and given this situation we try to formalize a significant part of this activity", concluded Carlos Fernandes Borges.
