Angola will carry out a repatriation flight for almost 300 citizens who are in a "difficult situation" in Cuba, Health Minister Silvia Lutucuta announced.

At the daily press conference to take stock of the covid-19 pandemic, the minister stressed that the government is concerned "with Angolans all over the world and has been paying attention to Angolans abroad".

For this reason, "a humanitarian flight" will be made to Cuba, where 283 Angolans are "in a difficult situation".

According to the Angop news agency, the flight of the Angolan air carrier will take place on Sunday, April 19.

"They have been there for a long time and as there is already community circulation of the virus it is difficult to provide assistance at a distance," he said.

The minister said that the government took the decision to pick up these Angolans who were undergoing medical treatment and were left without financial conditions to continue, as well as assistance conditions.

"Cuba also needs its infrastructure," stressed Silvia Lutucuta, indicating that citizens who return will be institutionally quarantined and will have to sign a term of commitment regarding compliance with the isolation.

Angop said that in March other citizens from South Africa and Portugal were "rescued".

The minister did not say whether there will be further repatriation operations or when these flights took place.

On the country's level of preparedness to respond to the pandemic, Silvia Lutucuta said that there are currently 200 beds in intensive care and that the objective is "to guarantee at least 600 beds in intensive care".

She added that five thousand new beds are being purchased for patients with mild or moderate manifestations who may be in hospital.

According to Silvia Lutucuta, in addition to the 200 ventilators already installed nationwide, another 380 ventilators were purchased for invasive ventilation and another 300 for non-invasive ventilation.

Angola announced this Saturday an increase in positive cases from 19 to 24, after nine days without registering new infections.
