Minister for Transport admits "significant" reduction in revenue

Transport Minister Ricardo d'Abreu admitted on Friday that the impact of covid-19 will be significant in this sector, due to the reduction in revenue, and said that he is studying support aimed mainly at civil aviation.

Ricardo d'Abreu indicated, in an assessment of the first week of the state of emergency in Angola, that a study of the impact on the transport sector was carried out, concluding that the effect of the pandemic will be "severe" and "not exclusive to Angola".

Only the limitation of mobility of people to avoid community transmission means a drastic reduction in the operational capacity of all companies and sub-sectors, he said, adding that estimates point to a "very significant reduction in revenue", with civil aviation being the most affected sector that "lacks some support from the State to compensate for losses".

As an example, he noted that since the state of emergency was declared in Angola, which limits the movement of people, TAAG air carrier no longer operates 204 domestic flights, which means 16,500 people are not transported.

At international level, 180 flights corresponding to almost 30,000 passengers have been withdrawn.

Currently, there are almost 6700 Angolans, with tickets issued, who are waiting for flights to return to Angola but are prevented by the state of emergency that was declared on 27 March and the health fence that imposes these restrictions.

"The focus is on containing the possibility of community transmission of this pandemic," he said.

In relation to other companies, particularly those of the railways, Ricardo d'Abreu indicated that measures "will be proposed to mitigate during this period the treasury difficulties".
