According to a statement from the United Nations agency, UNICEF intends to deliver "hygiene, sanitation and personal protection kits, consisting of soap, bleach bottles, water disinfectants, water tanks, hand sanitizers, gloves and masks".
These materials are part of a package that will serve, in a first phase, to support the response to covid-19 in the provinces of Cunene, Huíla, Namibe and Luanda.
According to UNICEF, 300 boxes of pills have been delivered to disinfect water, 3000 20-liter containers for storing water, 1200 bottles for water treatment, 3000 bars of soap, 3000 bottles of bleach and 50 personal protection kits.
UNICEF's interim representative in Angola, Jean François Basse, pointed out that the organization is “extremely concerned with the possible social and economic impact of the pandemic”, which leads it to work with various ministerial departments to “study mechanisms” for reducing effects of the pandemic on the lives of children and their families.
According to the statement, UNICEF has collaborated with the Ministry of Social Action, Family and Promotion of Women to “elaborate procedures for the care of children in reception centers.
Also within the scope of the partnership with the same Ministry, UNICEF intends to support more than 8000 families and 17,500 children and maintain 14 integrated social action centers.
UNICEF is also collaborating with the Ministry of Health, with a view to strengthening the capacity of services and workers in the sector, both in the prevention and control of infections, and in the provision of protective equipment.
The UN agency was also satisfied with the transmission of classes on television and radio, since schools are closed due to the confinement measures enacted by the Government of President João Lourenço.
"In times of emergency, it is important to ensure continuity of access to health, adequate nutrition, quality education and that the most vulnerable enjoy mechanisms of social protection to mitigate the impact of the economic and social shock," added Jean François Basse .
