FIBA confirms Angola as the venue for the 31st Afrobasket

The African Basketball Confederation (FIBA Africa) confirmed, this Friday, that the 31st edition of the African senior men's championship in the sport – better known as Afrobasket – will be played in Angola. The competition is scheduled for 2025.

Angola, which already hosted the competition in 1989, 1999 and 2007, holding the largest number of titles in the competition (11), surpassed the 'rival' candidates from Morocco and Egypt, standing out for its infrastructure and organizational capacity.

With experience in hosting international competitions, not only basketball but various sports, the country has several modern multipurpose pavilions in different provinces, such as Lunda, Huíla, Benguela, Malanje, Cabinda and Namibe.

Angola's candidacy is also part of the celebration of 50 years of National Independence, which takes place on November 11th.

In a recent interview with Angop, Moniz Silva, president of the Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB), expressed confidence in the success of Angola's candidacy for the organization of Afrobasket 2025. The leader even announced a future trip to the country of Mozambican Aníbal Manave, president of FIBA Africa, scheduled for this March.

This is the fourth time that the country will host the biggest African basketball competition, 35 years after hosting the championship for the first time. Remember that in the last championship held in the country, in 2007, the competition was divided between the cities of Luanda, Cabinda, Benguela, Huambo and Huíla.

The national senior men's basketball team has a total of 11 continental titles, the first of which was won precisely the first time it hosted the competition – Luanda, 1989 – under the command of coach Victorino Cunha.

Despite the largest number of titles in the competition, Angola has not won since 2013 (Côte D'Ivoire, under the command of Paulo Macedo). In this way, the main objective of the national team is to rescue the continental title at home.
