University will create botanical garden in Uíge capable of bringing together more than 1000 species of plants

The creation of a botanical garden in Uíge is being prepared by Kimpa Vita University. Set to be installed in a space of 25 hectares, this will be the first botanical garden in the region and will have the capacity to bring together more than 1000 species of plants with medicinal properties, food supplements, as well as tourist attractions.

The garden, according to Domingos Santos Mpungui, vice-rector for the Scientific Area, will be used for the collection, cultivation and display of a wide variety of plants. Therefore, with this project, the prospects include creating a protected environmental zone made up of collections of plants aimed at developing research, environmental conservation, as well as environmental education, writes Angop.

Plants with medicinal, food or raw material value may have future uses in the production sector, he clarified, adding that the plants will be conserved, named and proceed to the business sector, in which there are companies that will be able to study more about these species.

The person responsible, speaking to Angop, said that the garden will allow the preservation of some endangered species, having also pointed out the creation, later, of a biochemistry analysis laboratory aimed at discovering the properties of plants, that is, whether they have medicinal properties, food or serve as raw material.

He thus pointed out that with this action, science will move towards contributing gains to society, since the interest is not only related to preservation, but also to the use of plants.

Regarding the presence of rare plants in the province of Uíge, the person responsible said that there are between 10 and 15 endemic plants in the region, which is why he said he sees an advantage in preserving them, having argued that "all" plants have medicinal value, as well as other properties.

He also pointed out the issue of tourism, saying, for example, that a tourist when visiting Uíge can ask about Loe Uigense, writes Angop. In this way, the botanical garden will be able to display several rare plants, whose scenery could generate financial resources with the arrival of tourists.

Remember that, last month, the discovery of two plants with medicinal properties in Uíge was announced, namely Aloe Uigensis and Impatiens Pinganoensis.
