Alves da Rocha defends annual salary adjustments based on growth and productivity

Economist Alves da Rocha considered that the government should view the general strike underway in the country “with concern” and defended annual adjustments in salaries in accordance with economic growth and productivity.

:

“A strike only exists in extreme conditions and therefore the government's concern should be how positions can be brought closer”, suggested the director of the Center for Studies and Scientific Research (CEIC) at the Catholic University of Angola (Ucan) who This Thursday he presented his book “Understanding the Angola of tomorrow… today”.

The researcher argued that economies must have mechanisms so that salary adjustments are made annually, taking into account economic growth and productivity.

But, he added, unions must also have the capacity to “address the economic component of economic growth and income distribution”, encouraging trade unions to create their own study offices to better explain to their members the limits of the economy and of the claims.

Alves da Rocha said, however, that until the inflation trend is controlled, it will be difficult to adjust salaries and, in particular, the minimum wage, urging the negotiation process.

Furthermore, the correlation between salary increases and inflation should be studied, he maintained.

Regarding the book he presented, Alves da Rocha stated that he intends to address other aspects of the failure of economic policy in Angola, which have to do with intangible factors, highlighting culture and ideology among these.

“We are running serious risks of having poverty as a cultural factor and if that happens, the conditions will not be created to kick the poverty that afflicts many millions of citizens”, said the academic.

This Friday, national workers are carrying out the second day of a general strike called by the three trade unions, which did not reach an agreement with the Government on increases in the minimum wage and civil service salaries.
