Committee deliberates dismissal of PHA party president

The political committee of the Humanist Party of Angola (PHA) decided to dismiss its president for alleged mismanagement, violation of the statutes and appropriation of party assets, but she denies the accusations, considering the decision “fraudulent”.

The PHA's national political committee, in a final statement from its extraordinary meeting held over the weekend and accessed by Lusa, stated that, following an investigation, it was confirmed that the party's president, Florbela Malaquias, "seriously violated" the party's statutes and engaged in harmful management of the PHA's assets.

In this statement, the committee stated that it analyzed and discussed a report on the disciplinary proceedings instituted against the president, which proved that "in addition to the unlawful acts that seriously violated the party's statutes," she also engaged in acts that constituted harmful management of the party's assets.

As president of the party and of the National Political Committee, she transferred 100.7 million kwanzas from the party's bank account for personal purposes between October 2022 and December 2024, without any justification or approval from the political committee, the statement states.

Florbela Malaquias is also accused of unilaterally removing a vehicle for her son from the party's assets, without any approval or knowledge from the National Political Committee, and of failing to submit the party's budget execution and financial management documents for the 2023 and 2024 fiscal years, as well as the annual accounts, for approval by the National Financial Audit Committee.

For the national political committee of PHA, a party founded in 2022, the "proven facts" constitute "serious disciplinary infractions," and the repercussions of her actions jeopardize the relationship between the president and the political committee, the party's members, and their friends.

Violation of the aforementioned principles and duties constitutes a serious disciplinary infraction under the party's statutes, as noted by the political committee, which decided, for just cause, to remove her from party bodies or public office, given the gravity of the facts.

Florbela Malaquias downplayed and denied the decision of her party's National Political Committee, calling it a "fraudulent" initiative from a "group of dissidents" without any legitimacy.

"That's not the political committee; that's a group of dissidents. They are fraudulent and are misleading public opinion. I also want to clarify that, according to our statutes, the national political committee meetings are chaired by the president, and as far as I remember, I did not chair that meeting," the political leader said this Monday.

Speaking to Lusa, Florbela Malaquias, a member of parliament elected in 2022, considered the decision to be "manipulation by disgruntled individuals who want to forcefully assume the party presidency" just as the national convention is being prepared.

The party leader also cited another article in the bylaws "that shields the party from these adventures, stating that the resolutions of the national convention can only be modified, replaced, or revoked by another national convention. It is not a group of friends that gets together and changes the resolutions of the national convention."

Regarding the use of party vehicles for personal purposes and the damaging management of PHA assets, Malaquias refuted this, classifying the accusations as "fanfare" by a group that doesn't pay party dues and has "financial ambitions."

"We live in a time when 'fake news' practically rules the world and society, and that's what we're seeing. We can only speak of damaging management with concrete evidence; they're not inside the party, they have no say in the management," she argued.

The congresswoman also assured that her party will hold its national convention on August 30th.
