Angolan Football Federation guarantees the permanence of coach Pedro Gonçalves

The Angolan Football Federation (FAF) revealed that Portuguese coach Pedro Gonçalves will continue to guide the national team, despite the fact that qualification for the African Cup of Nations (CAN2023) is at risk.

The information was provided by the vice-president of the FAF, José Carlos Miguel, who is confident in Angola's qualification for the CAN, which will be played in January 2024 in Ivory Coast.

"The technical team remains, as nothing is broken yet. We are in the fight, we will maintain the spirit of cohesion, we will continue to fight, because we believe that at the end of this qualifying Angola will effectively qualify for the CAN of Costa do Ivory," he said.

Despite the belief, he recognizes that the draw (1-1) on Monday against Ghana, complicated the aspirations of the Angolans. "We will face the other games with the same attitude, with the same responsibilities, with the same commitment, nothing is yet defined in the group, it is true that now things become a little more complicated", he admitted.

After the game, the Angolans present at the 11 de Novembro stadium demanded the resignation of Pedro Gonçalves, considered by analysts and journalists as responsible for the loss of two precise points, due to the substitutions made before Ghana tied the game.

The team will play again on June 11th against the Central African Republic, on loan in Cameroon, and, in case of defeat, it will lose the possibility of being present in the biggest African competition in terms of selections. The Angolans close the qualification phase in Luanda, in the reception to Madagascar, in September.

Angola is ranked third in Group E, with five points, which is led by Ghana, with eight, followed by the Central African Republic, with seven. Madagascar is last, with one.
