Minister of Justice: Nito Alves, Sita Vales and José Van-Dunem may be among the ten bodies recovered

Nito Alves, Sita Valles and José Van-Dunem, protagonists of the alleged May 27, 1977 coup, may be among the ten bodies recovered by CIVICOP and whose confirmation is being made through the comparison of genetic material.

:

The announcement was made by the Minister of Justice, Francisco Queiroz, at the end of the third meeting of the Commission for Reconciliation in Memory of Victims of Political Conflicts (CIVICOP) in which balances of the subgroups of microlocation and exhumation of bones, medical-forensics and communication were presented. institutional of this body.

According to Francisco Queiroz, the bodies of ten people were located and are being worked on by the medical-forensic team so that it is possible to compare the DNA with the genetic results obtained from 35 families.

"There is no certainty about who owns the bones of these ten individuals, eight with complete bones and two with partial bones," he said, admitting that they may be from people related to 27 de Maio by the way and place they were found.

"The indicators point to people related to the 27th of May, namely Nito Alves, Pedro Fortunato, Bakalov, Monstro Immortal, Sita Valles, José Van-Dunem, David Zé, Urbano de Castro, Domingos Barros "Sabata" and Artur Nunes and also Júlio and Ilídio Ramalhete, two twin employees of the ex-DISA (political police)", he said.

Among these are central figures on the 27th of May such as Nito Alves, then former Minister of Internal Affairs and appointed leader of the alleged coup, the guerrilla Monstro Immortal, and former members of the MPLA Central Committee, Sita Valles and José Van -Dunem, added the ruler.

"There are more than the ten bodies that we found, but we have sent letters to the families of all of these to collect the genetic material and carry out the crossing", explained the minister.

On May 27, 1977, an alleged coup attempt was violently repressed by the regime of António Agostinho Neto, the first President of independent Angola. In a settling of accounts between leaders of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and with the help of Cuban troops, then present in Angola, the regime arrested and killed thousands of people, the total of which was never determined.

"There are strong probabilities that, once the examinations of the families and the bones are concluded, we can reach the conclusion that one of these is actually what we are thinking about", said Francisco Queiroz, stressing, however, that the work requires technical rigor and patience, so dates cannot be specified.

CIVICOP will send a team to collect the genetic material to Lisbon, where some relatives of the victims are, but the DNA test will be carried out in Angola, he said.

"The possibility was analyzed that the bones could go to the countries where the families are, to Portugal, but in view of the ethical and legal implications it was concluded that it will be the genetic material to be sent" to Angola, justified the minister.

CIVICOP's work will continue in other locations, namely in Jamba, where the commission is working with the UNITA representative so that bones can also be collected there in places that UNITA indicates.

Jamba was the refuge and headquarters of UNITA forces in the southwest of the country, between 1976 and 1992, during the civil war that opposed the MPLA government forces to the party led by Jonas Savimbi, killed in combat on 22 February 2002.

There are currently around 400 bones still undergoing primary treatment, added the official, asking families to come forward to collect the genetic material.

This Tuesday's meeting also addressed the issue of compensation requested by some victims' families.

"Some families are thinking that with this work there will be money, that they will receive money from the State, CIVICOP's principle is that this work should not be remunerated. However, the possibility of providing some logistical support to families with difficulties at the time of carrying out the death, which will be analyzed on a case-by-case basis", said the head of the Justice Department.
