Organization of the “Pensar Angola” congress denounces press intimidation and boycott

Businessman Francisco Viana, one of the mentors of the “Pensar Angola” congress, denounced intimidation of the organization and regretted the public media boycott of coverage of the initiative, admitting to formalizing a complaint with the regulator.

Francisco Viana and former Prime Minister Marcolino Moco met this Tuesday in Luanda with Abel Chivukuvuku, president of the political project PRA-JÁ Servir Angola (whose legalization process was rejected by the Constitutional Court) and which is currently part of the Patriotic Front. Unida, a movement that also brings together the leader of UNITA, Adalberto da Costa Júnior, and the Democratic Bloc, Filomeno Vieira Lopes, and which intends to contest the general elections scheduled for August this year.

"Just as PRA-JÁ was excluded, we also began to be excluded", said the businessman who was received by Chivukuvuku to invite the politician to participate in the congress.

Francisco Viana admitted to making a formal complaint to the ERCA (Angolan Media Regulatory Authority) and criticized the manipulation of the media, regretting the exclusion, as they are paid with Angolan taxes.

"We are being boycotted", he criticized, stressing that he tried to sensitize those responsible for the main public bodies, without results. "We are full citizens, if these rights are not fulfilled, we will go to the last consequences", guaranteed the also president of the Business Confederation of Angola (CEA), also denouncing "intimidation".

As he explained, there have been difficulties, some pressure, phone calls and direct contacts with members of the organization asking them to "don't meddle in this" and "don't talk about politics".

"But the boy [Angolan citizen] is already big, the boy is tired of talking in the corners and the boy will even talk about politics because it is his right. Don't do that, don't come with these intimidations", he stressed, without pointing Who would be behind the pressure?

Francisco Viana stressed that he does not intend to antagonize any party and that the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) - of which he is a militant - will be well received at the congress, indicating that invitations have already been addressed to the president of the party and also President of Angola, João Lourenço, whom he designated as "dear longtime friend".

"I cannot simultaneously invite the MPLA and be inside my house to insult the MPLA. The MPLA is very welcome, UNITA is very welcome, there are no bandits here, we are all Angolans and we must discuss these matters in the congress without conclusions", said the businessman, rejecting "partisanizing the congress", but admitting that the MPLA chair could be empty.

Meetings are also planned with the president of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) and the Democratic Bloc, president of the Broad Convergence for the Salvation of Angola – Electoral Coalition (CASA-CE) and other parties with parliamentary seats such as the Partido the Social Renewal (PRS) and the National Front for the Liberation of Angola (FNLA).

Francisco Viana stressed that he was "born in the MPLA", which he continues to consider a great party, but added that "unfortunately" this is not the project he would have liked to see.

"I am not MPLA, nor UNITA, I am Angolan", he insisted, rejecting the label of opposition, and reiterating that the objective of the congress is "to see what good can be done, together".

On the other hand, he considered that there are beginning to be "very serious signs" of political intolerance, adding that "the manipulation is serious", and saying that there are public bodies that are "intoxicating the country".

"We are very close to a war, if there is a minimum of political influence, such as in the courts, canceling (party) congresses, this will be iron and fire, but I want exactly the opposite", stressed the businessman.

The "Congress of the Nation. Think Angola", takes place on the 27th and 28th of May, in Viana.
