Abel Chivukuvuku warns of “signs of intolerance” and says leaving power “is not the end”

Politician Abel Chivukuvuku warned of “worrying signs of intolerance” in Angola, at a time when the country is preparing for general elections, and underlined that leaving power “is not the end”.

The former UNITA leader, who was also president of the CASA-CE coalition and currently leads the political project PRA-JÁ Servir Angola, was speaking after a meeting, in Luanda, with the organizing committee of the "Pensar Angola" congress, including businessman Francisco Viana and former prime minister Marcolino Moco.

"Worrying signs of intolerance and difficulty of reciprocal acceptance of difference are beginning to appear", warned Chivukuvuku, alluding to the recent case of clashes in Sanza Pombo, Uíje province, involving militants from the MPLA and UNITA, who have exchanged accusations about their respective responsibilities. in violent acts.

Chivukuvuku stressed that "everyone has the right of free choice" that "must be respected" and considered, therefore, that it is important to hold a forum where discussions can be "without taboos and without coercion".

"We all want the good of the country and the question of exercising political power should not be seen as an end in itself, but only as a platform to carry out a work, that work is Angola and the Angolans", he stressed.

In addition to being president of the political project PRA-JÁ Servir Angola (whose party legalization process was rejected by the Constitutional Court), Chivukuvuku is currently part of the United Patriotic Front, a movement in which the leader of UNITA, Adalberto da Costa Júnior, and the Bloco Democratic, Filomeno Vieira Lopes, and who intends to contest the general elections scheduled for August this year.

For Chivukuvuku, the "Thinking Angola" congress can contribute to reducing the possibility of tension: "It is true that, when there is a dispute, there is always tension, but it has to be tolerable and acceptable tension", he continued, considering it necessary to have an understanding "so that people don't think that leaving power is the end of life".

"No, alternation is only good. The day they return to the government – ​​if they return – they will return with a different behavior. They will learn and it will be useful", he added.

"We need to reduce this atmosphere of tension, there are families saying that they want to send their children to Portugal. There is no need, we can work so that the change is peaceful, orderly and the result is the growth and good of the country. ways to settle our differences", he appealed.

The "Congress of the Nation. Think Angola", takes place on the 27th and 28th of May, in Viana. The organizing committee includes former prime minister Marcolino Moco, academics and musician Eduardo Paim, who defend a "consensus project" for the country.

The organizing committee points out the "moments of great uncertainty, instability and serious economic and social crisis" that Angola is going through after 46 years of independence and says that the elections are also an opportunity to improve the country's conditions.

Contribute to a common project in favor of a more inclusive, solidary and democratic Angola, for a better clarification, pre-electoral, on the proposals of the political forces competing for governance for the mandate from 2022 to 2027, and for the creation of an environment of peace and concord, pre and post-election and for a transparent, fair and peaceful electoral process are the objectives of the congress.

The initiative aims to bring together representatives of national communities from across the country and the diaspora, political parties, activists, civil society, religious institutions, experts, traditional authorities, among other partners.
