Freiburg Festival dedicates program to Angolan cinema

More than a dozen films produced and made in Angola, or which deal with this country, will be shown at the Freiburg Film Festival, which begins on the 18th in Switzerland, according to the schedule announced this Wednesday.

Nicolas Brodard:

The films - ten feature films and four 'shorts' - will be shown in the "New Territory" section, dedicated to cinematographies little or nothing known in Switzerland, curated this year by producer Jorge Cohen, co-founder of the Angolan production company Geração 80.

According to the festival, this will be the first retrospective of Angolan cinema in over twenty years and Jorge Cohen's choices demonstrate "the diversity of Angolan cinema".

"Why did it take so long? Because it's a Portuguese-speaking country? Because of the 25-year civil war that erupted after the country declared independence in 1975?", asks the festival.

Among the films chosen to screen at the Swiss festival - many of which are premiered - are "Ar Condicionado" (2020), "Independência" (2005) and "Alambamento" (2010), all signed by Fradique, the artistic name of the Angolan director Mário Bastos, co-founder of Geração 80.

In Friburgo, among others, "Na cidade vazia" (2004), a feature film by director Maria João Ganga, "O grande Kilapy" (2012), by Zezé Gamboa, and "I love kuduro" (2014) will also be screened, by the Portuguese director Mário Patrocínio, and "Njinga Rainha de Angola" (2013), by the Portuguese director Sérgio Graciano.

The 36th edition of the Freiburg Film Festival will take place from the 18th to the 27th of March and for the first time since the covid-19 pandemic began, programming will be shown again in a cinema, with an audience, with 127 films from 58 countries.
