Cafunfo: two policemen involved in the incidents dismissed for “serious infractions”

Two policemen, including a chief inspector, involved in the 30 January incidents in Cafunfo, were dismissed for “serious disciplinary offenses”, including bodily harm and the desecration of a corpse, according to an order from the Commander-in-Chief of the National Police.

According to the note to which Lusa had access, signed by Paulo Almeida, Chief Inspector Eduardo Tomé and Agent Jonilto Txijica incurred in "acts of bodily offenses against detainees and desecration of a corpse, when the Cafunfo police station invaded" on the 30th of January.

On that day, according to the police, about 300 elements of the Portuguese Protectorate Movement in Lunda Norte tried to invade the police station, six people were killed in the clashes with the authorities, who were trying to defend themselves.

The official version is contradicted by local witnesses, non-governmental organizations and opposition parties, who point to about 25 dead, saying it was an attempt at peaceful demonstration.

In view of the "serious disciplinary infractions" found in the actions of the two policemen, the command-general assigned them the penalty of dismissal.

"The dismissed staff must take over the entire uniform of the Angolan National Police, as well as the police identification documents", adds the dispatch.
