Four deaths and three missing due to rains in Luanda

The torrential rains that fell over three hours this Tuesday in Luanda resulted in four deaths and three missing, according to a provisional balance sheet by the spokesman for the civil protection and fire service.

Faustino Miguéns, speaking to public television in Angola (TPA), said that two people died of electrocution while the other two were dragged by water, in the municipalities of Luanda, Viana and Cacuaco. Among the victims is a child under 10 years old.

Three children are reported missing, he added, noting that the authorities are making every effort to mitigate the effects of the rains.

Among the measures taken are the opening of water crossing lines, for drainage, although admitting that the accumulated garbage is hampering operations.

"[Garbage] is making it difficult, given the limited means," admitted Miguéns, stressing that the rains affected 80 percent of the territory of Luanda.

In Viana, more than 300 houses were flooded, he said, also warning of the risks posed by the construction of houses close to water lines.

Seven trees also fell, some of them on vehicles, and some rainwater retention basins overflowed.

Torrential rains caused floods, congestion and left impassable streets in the capital.

In the flooded streets of the city and neighborhoods, debris, mud and water accumulated, which prevented or hindered the movement of many residents throughout the morning.
