Covid-19: 307 more dead and 7799 new cases in Africa in the last 24 hours

Africa recorded an additional 307 deaths from covid-19 in the last 24 hours, with the region accounting for more recoveries than new infections in this period, according to the latest official data.

According to the African Union's Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of infected people in the organization's 55 member states is 3,982,844, plus 7799 in the last 24 hours.

The number of recovered in the last 24 hours - 11,538 - exceeds that of new cases, for a total of 3,564,351.

Southern Africa remains the most affected region, with 1,859,472 infected and 57,646 killed by the disease. In this region, South Africa, the country hardest hit by the covid-19 on the continent, records 1,522,697 cases and 50,906 deaths.

North Africa is the second most affected area by the pandemic, with 1,185,708 infected and 33,815 fatalities.

East Africa accounts for 422,969 infections and 7832 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 403,922 and that of deaths is 5247.

Central Africa has 110,773 cases and 1862 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most fatalities, after South Africa, has 11,082 deaths and 187,716 infected, followed by Morocco, with 8695 deaths and 486,833 cases.

Among the countries most affected are also Tunisia, with 8268 deaths and 238,613 cases, Algeria, with 3024 deaths and 114,451 infected, and Ethiopia, with 2451 fatalities and 168,335 infections.

In relation to Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique registers 700 deaths and 62,882 cases, followed by Angola (516 deaths and 21,114 cases of infection), Cape Verde (154 deaths and 15,826 cases), Equatorial Guinea (96 deaths and 6371 cases) , Guinea-Bissau (49 deaths and 3319 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (32 deaths and 1977 cases).
