Covid-19: Africa with 232 more dead and 8558 more infected in the last 24 hours

Africa has recorded 232 more covid-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, for a total of 105,722 since the pandemic began, and 8558 new cases of infection, according to the latest official pandemic data for the continent.

According to the African Union Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the total number of infected people in the organization's 55 member states is 3,963,706 and the number of people recovered in the last 24 hours is 7415, for a total of 3,540,989 since the start of the pandemic.

Southern Africa remains the worst affected region, with 1,855,291 people infected and 57,325 people killed by the disease on Monday. Within this region, South Africa, the country worst hit by covid-19 on the continent, registers 1,521,068 cases and 50,678 deaths.

North Africa is the second hardest hit by the pandemic, with 1,180,576 infected and 33,615 deaths.

East Africa counts 419,546 infections and 7768 deaths, while in West Africa the number of infections is 401,454 and the number of deaths is 5194.

Central Africa has 106,839 cases and 1820 deaths.

Egypt, which is the second African country with the most deaths after South Africa, has 10,995 deaths and 186,503 infected, followed by Morocco with 8682 deaths and 486,223 cases.

Among the most affected countries are also Tunisia, with 8201 deaths and 237,704 cases, Algeria, with 3015 deaths and 114,142 infected, and Ethiopia, with 2429 deaths and 166,138 infections.

Regarding the Portuguese-speaking countries, Mozambique records 693 deaths and 62,520 cases, followed by Angola (514 deaths and 21,086 cases of infection), Cape Verde (154 deaths and 15,782 cases), Equatorial Guinea (96 deaths and 6371 cases), Guinea-Bissau (49 deaths and 3312 cases) and São Tomé and Príncipe (32 deaths and 1944 cases).

The first case of covid-19 in Africa appeared in Egypt, February 14, 2020, and Nigeria was the first sub-Saharan African country to record cases of infection, February 28.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.

The covid-19 pandemic has caused at least 2,588,597 deaths worldwide, resulting from more than 116.4 million cases of infection, according to an assessment by the French agency AFP.
