Financial Information Unit admits “weak supervision” in the non-financial sector

The director of the Financial Information Unit (FIU), Francisca de Brito, admitted this Wednesday that the organization exercises “weak supervision” mainly in non-financial activity, namely in real estate, games, advocacy, accountants and other activities.

:

"But when we talk, for example, about games and real estate and not being there, what should be done is a problem for us," said Francisca de Brito, when speaking during a debate on "Preventing Money Laundering and Financing Terrorism" ".

The official maintained the insufficient application of the legislation is also a problem for the actions of the body she oversees, also recognizing the lack of statistics as a "serious problem" that needs to be resolved.

The issue of 'compliance' (compliance with laws and regulations) and supervision of the actions of Politically Exposed People (PPE) was also the subject of debate at this meeting, organized by Media Rumo, within the scope of "Conversations with Rumo".

For Francisca de Brito, there is no problem with being a PPE, but in them, she noted, special attention must always be paid for managing a lot of money, admitting that this is a "difficult and big discussion".

"Institutions are asked to pay special attention to PPE because they generate a lot of money, this is a big discussion, but they deserve special attention because they generate a lot of money," she noted.

In her intervention, in response to one of the participants at the meeting, the director of the FIU ensured a continuous work with all stakeholders and supervisors in the financial sector for the consequent monitoring of the regulations.

The Financial Information Unit, according to its official, is already preparing for regular evaluation by international organizations.

The system of anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism was the subject of discussion at this meeting.
