Among the nominees are also the Portuguese President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and former executive secretaries of the CPLP.

According to the list of ten nominees, to which Lusa had access, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was nominated by the Real Gabinete de Leitura, a historical institution in Rio de Janeiro, while the Amilcar Cabral Foundation designated as candidate the Cape Verdean Luís Fonseca, executive secretary of the CPLP between 2004 and 2008.

Among the nominees are also the former executive secretary Maria do Carmo Silveira (2016-2018), from São Tomé, appointed by the Portuguese state, and her predecessor, the Mozambican ambassador Murade Murargy (2012-2016), on the initiative of Equatorial Guinea.

In statements to Lusa, the former executive secretary said he had requested his removal from this list of candidates for the award.

"I wanted to be consistent with my approach to this prize, which has been awarded mostly to heads of state or government and one or another institution," he said.

The prize, of 30 thousand euros, is awarded to the winner, and Murade Murargy recalled that he has always advocated that the amount should be applied to a post-graduate scholarship for Lusophone citizens.

After his two two-year terms in the CPLP, Murade Murargy has been working as an advisor to the government of Equatorial Guinea to help this country in its process of integration into the community, which it joined in 2014.

Among the other nominees are poet José Luís Tavares (Cape Verde); the University of Coimbra - Alma Mater Portuguesa (Health in Portuguese); associate professor of Portuguese and Brazilian Literature Roberto Vecchi (Italy); full professor in Hispanic-American Literature at the University of São Paulo Jorge Schwartz (Argentina); the German Society for Portuguese-Speaking African Countries - DASP (self-candidature) and proverb specialist André Almeida Panzo (Angola).

The jury of the award will meet this Thursday, by video conference, in the Permanent Concertation Committee (composed of the ambassadors of the nine member states).

Created in 2011, the José Aparecido de Oliveira Award aims to honor personalities and institutions that distinguish themselves in the defense, enhancement and promotion of the CPLP.

The first recipient was former Brazilian head of state Lula da Silva, and the list of recipients also includes United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, former Portuguese President Jorge Sampaio, and the African Union's high representative for partnerships with Europe, Carlos Lopes.

José Aparecido de Oliveira was a Brazilian politician and former Brazilian Minister of Culture, considered one of the main supporters of the creation of the CPLP.

The CPLP includes Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and East Timor.
