Street kids get "new home." Government of Luanda installs reception centres

A temporary centre was inaugurated this Monday in Luanda to welcome children and adults who make the streets of the capital their home. The space, located in Belas, in the district of Ramiros, has the capacity to receive 250 people.

The centre was set up on the premises of the Casa da Juventude dos Ramiros and aims to help children and adults who live in the street and who, for this reason, have a greater risk of contracting covid-19.

The inauguration of the centre took place this Monday and was attended by the governor of Luanda, Sergio Luther Rescova. In a statement to the press, he made it known that this space will be a new home for citizens of Luanda, Belas and Talatona.

Sérgio Luther Rescova also said that the children will be a priority. However, he made it clear that children living on the street with their parents will not be separated from them. In such cases, adults will also be admitted to the centre's facilities, he explained.

Already in Viana a centre will be set up for the elderly, considered as one of the groups most at risk in the presence of covid-19.

In the municipality of Cacuaco a centre will be set up with the capacity to receive 100 children. According to the Governor, only children will be welcomed in this space, since the centre will not have space to accommodate adults.

Sérgio Luther Rescova added that the families of the children in the street are being identified. The children without families will stay in the centres that are being set up and the rest will be handed over to their respective families.
