According to the Luanda Provincial Director of Agriculture, João Catinda, the spraying and disinfestation campaign started on Saturday, and has already been carried out in three formal markets in the capital, namely São Paulo, Quilómetro 30 and Kikolo.
João Catinda said that the campaign aimed to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus, responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic, which has already made Angola the first two deaths, in seven confirmed positive cases.
"The main objective is to mitigate the spread of the new coronavirus, we intend to start spraying the areas with the highest population flow, especially the formal and informal markets, at the stops and on all avenues in the city of Luanda," he said in statements to Angolan public radio.
The Luanda provincial director of Agriculture said they are having the support of some entrepreneurs and the Empresa Pública de Águas (EPAL) in terms of equipment and the supply of some reagents that are being used for disinfestation.
"We need more means to massify and we can reach the most hidden means. We're open, especially to agricultural entrepreneurs, they're the ones who have this kind of machinery", said João Catinda, highlighting that there are "stores closed with this kind of equipment to spray and it would be very good if they joined the cause at that time".
Angola already has two deaths of people infected by Covid-19 out of a total of seven positive cases, as Health Minister Sílvia Lutucuta announced on Sunday.
The country has been living since Friday in an extendable state of emergency, which lasts until 11 April, with bans on people and vehicles on public roads, in agglomerations and specific hours for food sales, among other measures.
