Bishops launch week of solidarity to help the needy

The Episcopal Conference of Angola and Sao Tome (CEAST) announced this Tuesday the launch of the National Solidarity Week, with the opening of a first national campaign, with a view to a "global awareness" to "help the most needy".

:

According to the president of CEAST, Filomeno Vieira Dias, who was speaking at the opening of the first annual assembly of the Catholic organization, the initiative aims to "give more strength in spiritual, material and human resources to the Christian imperative of solidarity.

The campaign, he explained, aims to be "an expression of communion, conversion and sharing" in the purpose of building "a true fraternity for life made fruitful by the Gospel".

"With this we want to generate a global consciousness of solidarity, of closeness, of overcoming indifference, a global consciousness for a change in one's way of being and being," he sustained.

The periodicity of the National Solidarity Week will be established during the assembly, which runs until Monday, at the "Mama da Muxima" sanctuary, the largest Marian centre in sub-Saharan Africa, in the municipality of Quiçama, Luanda.

The Archbishop of Luanda also wants to count on "the generosity and solidarity of all" and considers that "it is time to overcome distances, meet others, overcome judgments and prejudices.

"We want to be a Church with open doors, we must leave the culture of indifference to what goes on next," exhorted the leader of CEAST.

In the pastoral field, he defended the need to "grasp with more determination" the theme of the creation of new dioceses, a need felt for territorial extension, demographic growth and pastoral challenges.

"It is an old and current theme and I think it is time not to delay the issue any longer", he stressed.

The proposal of the theme for the next pastoral triennium, the approval of the statutes of the associations, the implications of the framework agreement signed between the Vatican and the Government and the repercussions of the first National Congress of the Clergy are on the agenda of more than 20 Catholic bishops.
