BP announces 6.1 million to finance demining

Oil company BP in Angola announced this Wednesday an increase in funding to US $ 6.1 million over the next four years to support the British NGO HALO Trust in the demining process in Benguela province.

:

"BP Angola today announces that it has increased funding to US $ 6.1 million over the next four years to support the work in Angola of the British non-governmental organization HALO Trust, dedicated to demining," reads a press release distributed by the oil company , in which it is added that another 4.9 million dollars were also made available to add to the 2.1 million dollars already announced in May last year.

"The new financing will allow HALO to employ 130 people, including at least 85 women in the Angolan province of Benguela; in total, the project aims to enable the safe use of 338 hectares of land, equivalent to 191 football fields, helping to end the threat of mines until 2023 ", the statement added.

In the past 15 years, BP says it has invested US $ 100 million in local communities and social initiatives in Angola, with mines still covering 23,000 hectares of land.

"As a humanitarian organization that hosted Prince Harry, here in Angola, it is particularly appropriate that this financial support comes from a British company", commented the president of HALO Trust, James Cowan.
