Covid-19: BNA recommends closing agencies with fewer clients

The National Bank of Angola (BNA) has recommended to Angolan banks the closure of less frequented branches, as part of the contingency measures to be implemented to halt the Covid-19 pandemic.

This was one of the recommendations that the regulator made to the Angolan Banking Association (ABANC), on Friday, in a meeting that brought together the Governor of BNA, José de Lima Massano, and the vice-president of ABANC and executive president of the International Credit Bank, Hugo Teles.

In a document to which Lusa had access, ABANC sets out some of the measures already taken by national banks to prevent the spread of the disease, including the use of gloves and masks, alcohol gel, and cleaning and disinfecting the facilities, admitting to attending the public with customers lined up outside and only one entry at a time.

The BNA, for its part, advises a "survey of the less frequented branches to close them" and a decrease in the number of branches, favouring greater use of electronic channels such as home banking and ATMs.

It also recommends "a timetable for action by areas" for the operation of the network and customer access to the branches and flexible working hours, "dispensing with non-essential staff".

The regulator also suggests more ATMs for deposits than for withdrawals and changing the scheme for large depositors, "considering solutions for not holding so many kwanzas, defining half a dozen counters for this purpose" on certain days and times.

The BNA is also evaluating the dispensation of certain reports, maintaining the holding of the annual meeting of the Banks' General Meetings for discussion and approval of accounts.
