"Cape Verde has always defended political stability, alignment with the principles and values of democracy. (...) We will take our proposal so that, together, we can advocate for the reestablishment of political stability in Mozambique", within the scope of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP), stated Austelino Correia, in a press conference to anticipate his trip to Angola.
The leader of the Cape Verdean parliament pointed, in particular, to "the exercise of political freedom, of full citizenship", so that "democracy can be increasingly strengthened" in the CPLP and "contribute to development", he added.
During the visit to Angola, which reinforces the parliamentary cooperation agreement (signed in July 2023), official meetings are planned, including a meeting with President João Lourenço.
The agenda includes debates about the CPLP, conflicts in Africa, with emphasis on the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the impacts of climate change.
"Angola is a country with vast natural reserves that can play an important role in mitigating food insecurity in Africa," said Austelino Correia.
Mozambique faced a period of instability after the general elections in October, rejected by Venâncio Mondlane, opponent of the candidate of the Mozambique Liberation Front, Daniel Chapo, who was sworn in as president of the Republic in January.
Tensions have eased, but there are still episodes of violence and protests in various parts of the country.
In December, Cape Verdean President José Maria Neves expressed concern about the post-electoral crisis in Mozambique, calling for dialogue and serenity among all political forces for a peaceful resolution of the situation.
