Cape Verdean PM says Cape Verde and Angola value the role of parliaments in conflict resolution

The Prime Minister of Cape Verde, Ulisses Correia e Silva, said this Monday that parliaments "can be voices that amplify the need for attention from African countries" to the promotion of peace, a concern that he says is "shared" with Angola.

"We share the need for greater vigor and visibility of actions for peace in relation to the various serious conflicts that plague African countries. Parliaments can be voices that amplify the need for attention from African countries and the international community to these conflicts and the promotion of lasting peace and security," said Ulisses Correia e Silva.

The official spoke after receiving, in Praia, the president of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, who is visiting the archipelago.

"This visit to Cape Verde is a valuable opportunity to strengthen ties between Cape Verde and Angola, highlighting the signing of a parliamentary cooperation protocol in key areas for both countries, such as cybersecurity, climate change, parity and gender equality, modernization of parliaments and artificial intelligence", also highlighted the prime minister, who is also president of the Movement for Democracy (parliamentary majority).

The head of the Cape Verdean Government also highlighted the holding in Luanda, next October, of the 147th general assembly of the Interparliamentary Union, which will take place for the first time in the Angolan capital.

The presidents of the parliaments of Cape Verde and Angola signed this Monday, in Praia, a new cooperation protocol, adapting the previous instrument to the new reality, said the president of the Cape Verdean National Assembly.

"We introduced matters such as emigrant communities, administrative and financial modernization, the opening of parliament to citizens, climate change and security", explained the president of the National Assembly, Austelino Correia, after signing the protocol with the Angolan counterpart, Carolina Cerqueira, which started a three-day visit to Praia.

"Today will be a historic day for the parliaments of Cape Verde and Angola because, by signing the addendum to the agreement signed precisely nine years ago, we took a step forward in relation to the systematization of the existing agreement with innovative areas that are decisive for the work of our institutions", said Carolina Cerqueira.

The parliamentarian added that in this new protocol new areas were identified that must be reinforced and adapted to the current activity of the two parliaments so that "there is a more pragmatic, more dynamic cooperation and, above all, that responds to the interest", not only of the institutions, "but also of the populations".

The president of the National Assembly began a visit to Cape Verde, which will last until Wednesday, the day on which Carolina Cerqueira will speak at a formal welcome session convened by the Cape Verdean body.

In addition to Carolina Cerqueira, the mission of the Angolan parliament to Cape Verde includes the first secretary of the National Assembly, Manuel Dembo, the president of the parliamentary group of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), Liberty Chiyaka, deputy of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) Mário Pinto de Andrade and the deputy and president of the Humanist Party of Angola, Florbela Malaquias.
