Angola sees record number of cholera cases over the weekend

The country reported 125 new cases of cholera on Saturday, the highest number since the outbreak began last month, which has already caused 59 deaths out of a total of 1,584 cases.

According to the Ministry of Health's epidemiological bulletin, the 125 cases of cholera are distributed across the provinces of Bengo (76), Luanda (37) and Icolo and Bengo (12).

Two deaths were also recorded in the same period, bringing the total to 59 since the outbreak began on January 7.

Currently, 209 people are hospitalized with cholera.

Since the beginning of the outbreak, 1584 cases have been reported, 970 in Luanda province, 351 in Bengo province, 250 in Icolo and Bengo province, four in Huambo province, three in Malanje province, three in Zaire province, two in the province of Huíla and one in the province of Cuanza Norte, aged between two and 100 years.

The deaths occurred in the provinces of Luanda (37), Bengo (15) and Icolo e Bengo (7).

The most affected age group is 2 to 5 years old, with 252 cases and 10 deaths, followed by the age group 10 to 14 years old, with 203 cases and four deaths.

Authorities have once again called on the population to follow the guidelines of health teams and maintain strict hygiene habits.

Cholera, which causes symptoms such as vomiting and watery diarrhea, is a disease associated with poor sanitation and water supply conditions.
