Angola reported this Sunday, for the first time in almost two years, since the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic in the country, zero new cases and no deaths due to the disease, according to the epidemiological bulletin of the health authorities.

In the last 24 hours, according to the epidemiological bulletin released this Sunday, there were no new cases or deaths, and 103 people recovered from the disease, aged between 7 and 86 years.

Angola currently accounts for 98,514 cases, of which 1,898 resulted in deaths, 96,377 recovered from the disease and 239 are in the active phase.

Six patients are hospitalized, 12 people are in institutional quarantine and 231 are in home isolation.

The laboratories processed 2312 PCR samples, with no positive cases, with a cumulative total of 1,403,739 samples and a 7 percent positivity rate.

Angola reported the first cases of infection with the SARS-CoV2 virus, two Angolan citizens from Portugal, on March 21, 2020, having closed borders and declared a state of emergency four days later.

Since then, the behavior of the epidemic has evolved according to the waves and variants of the disease, reaching peaks in cases and deaths in September 2021, during the third wave of the disease.

After a slowdown in October and November last year, cases rose again in December, hitting records on the 23rd, with 1163 new infections, and on the 28th, with 3090 infections registered in 24 hours.

At the end of January, the disease slowed down again, leading the government to ease restrictions and allowing the return of nightclubs, closed since the beginning of the pandemic.

However, it maintained the ban on access to beaches and public swimming pools and continues to require passengers who intend to leave Angola to present a negative pre-boarding PCR test, even if this obligation no longer exists in the countries of destination, as is the case in Portugal.

In February, the weekly average of cases has been less than 30 and the authorities have attributed the drop in the number of infections to the increase in the vaccination rate.

In two weeks, between 1 and 12 February, new cases dropped eight times, from 110 to 13.

Until 12 February, 15.7 million doses of vaccines against covid-19 had been administered in Angola, of which 10.9 million related to the first dose, corresponding to a coverage of 68 percent of the target population, and 5.2 million regarding the complete vaccination schedule, which means a coverage of 32 percent.
