Police concerned about robberies of goods vehicles registered in Luanda

The spokesman for the National Police in Luanda expressed his concern this Thursday with the frequent cases, in recent times, of robberies of goods transport vehicles, some of which with death records.

Nestor Goubel was speaking to the Lusa agency after disclosing the arrest, on Wednesday, of two men, aged 38 and 17, accused of stealing crates of beer from a goods transport vehicle, in the municipality of Viana, on the outskirts of Luanda.

According to the police officer, this is the second case that the police have recorded this year, the first having taken place on January 19, when a man was shot dead by a security guard while trying to rob a moving truck leaving Porto from Luanda, carrying sacks of rice.

"Last year we had in Luanda, because the others were in the provinces, one between four and five cases, but they should not exceed six cases", said Nestor Goubel, stressing that the situation is worrying, but not alarming, "because the cases cooled down a little as a result of the police measures".

According to the spokesperson, there has been an awareness campaign through the media "which has been cooling those appetites a little".

On the motivations, Nestor Goubel considered that "it is really the desire to divest", moving away from the arguments of social crisis.

"We grew up with difficulty and we never went robbing cars, I think there is some desire on the part of the other people's friends who are already on the lookout with some malice to want to steal, but as a result of this fight that we have been doing, this tendency has been decreasing", highlighted.

The spokesperson stressed that such actions cause damage to the owners of the goods and also a general feeling of insecurity, with the support of new technologies.

"There are measures that are underway at the level of municipalities and we are feeling a reduction, we had that case three weeks ago and now this one, in which individuals were arrested in the act", he underlined.

The Luanda Police spokesperson appealed to the owners of the goods to redouble security to deal with these situations, taking into account the difficulty of the police to be present in all the arteries of the city.

In recent times, in several provinces of Angola there have been reports of cases of this kind, of people who remove goods they are carrying from goods transport vehicles, some in progress and others that, due to road accidents or breakdown, are forced to stop.

In addition to deaths among robbers, there is also a record of deaths among vehicle drivers.

On 8 January this year, the Criminal Investigation Service announced the arrest of four people who had purchased products robbed from a refrigerated truck, whose driver, from Luanda, was killed by the robbers, in Kwanza Norte province.

On social networks, there are also several amateur videos of cases of assaults on goods vehicles, whether by companies or individuals, which take place all over the country.
