DOC Luanda: International Documentary Film Festival opens in Angola in April

Organized by Camões - Centro Cultural Português, in partnership with Mukixe Produções Audiovisuais and the company CriaCom, Angola will also see this year the first edition of DOC Luanda, the International Documentary Film Festival that arrives determined to put national cinema "on the crest" of the wave”.

As an event that is intended to be annual, DOC Luanda has its premiere scheduled for April, from the 2nd to the 7th, being directed by filmmaker Jorge António.

Aimed at documentary and unpublished cinema in Angola, Camões' proposal for the realization of DOC Luanda has an educational background, says the institute in a statement sent to VerAngola.
The festival aims to "encourage cultural exchange, establish a contemporary vision of the world and of Angola through cinema and its history, thus also contributing to the future of the Angolan cinema scene".

The cinema sessions will be free, according to the available places and in accordance with biosafety rules, and will be composed of the categories 'International Competition' (it is intended to make known authors and recent titles in world cinematography), 'National Competition' (it is intended to make known the most recent Angolan national production in short and feature film formats) and 'Thematic and Non-Competitive Sessions' (the intention is to show films that are little seen and important for the culture and history of Angola, but also focus on authors and filmographies of world cinematography).

The festival will also feature a 'Homage Session', a tribute to a figure (director, actor, technician) of Angolan cinema, whose work was or is important in the development of the sector.

DOC Luanda will also have 'Masterclasses/Meetings', which will be conversations and meetings with the public around topics of interest and importance for the development of Angolan cinema. The intention is that professionals of recognized merit and competence in their specialties are invited to these meetings or masterclasses.

There will also be space for concerts and performing arts, as well as a Book and DVD Fair and an exhibition on the history of national cinema.

"Cinema in countries like Angola represents something very important, not only with regard to preserving the memory of an entire people, but at the same time the image of an identity and development that it can show to the rest of the world", he says.
