Two Angolans elected to African Union posts

Two Angolans, who were running for African Union (AU) positions, were elected this Thursday. They are Wilson Almeida Adão and Pascoal António Joaquim, who will hold positions in the Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child and the African Union Advisory Council on Corruption, respectively.

Wilson Almeida Adão, who was one of 10 candidates for seven vacancies and needed 37 votes, was elected in the second round with 41 votes. Pascoal António Joaquim, who was among 11 candidates for six vacancies and also needed 37 votes, was elected in the fourth round with 46 votes, revealed the Permanent Representation of Angola to the AU, in a statement quoted by Angop.

The Angolans were elected during the 38th Executive Council of the AU, which took place on Wednesday and Thursday, by videoconference.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Teté António, who attended the meeting, considered that the election of Wilson Almeida Adão and Pascoal António Joaquim to AU staff represents a victory for all Angolans.

He also considered that this election is synonymous with the Government's effort to integrate more Angolan representatives in international bodies.

The holder of the Foreign Relations portfolio also said he hoped that the new commissioners could bring the Angolan experience to the AU, but that they would also have the opportunity to learn.

The African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, composed of 11 experts, monitors the implementation of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, which analyzes documents and reports submitted by States, evaluates complaints and conducts questionnaires.

The African Union's Advisory Council on Corruption aims to encourage States Parties to adopt and implement measures against corruption.

For Teté António, the fight against corruption, which has been carried out in Angola, led to the election of the Angolan Pascoal António Joaquim to the council.

Wilson de Almeida Adão is a professor of International Law and African Rights at the Law Faculty of the Catholic University of Angola. Pascoal Joaquim, Deputy Attorney General of the Republic, is a member of the Committee of Magistrates of the Public Prosecutor's Office and a member of the Superior Council of the Public Prosecutor's Office.

During the weekend, the 34th Session of the Assembly of the AU will elect the president and vice-president of the organization as well as the six commissioners of the African Union Commission in Angola, where Angola Josefa Sacko, the current Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, is running.
