Jerusalema Challenge: South African music and Angolan choreography make Portugal dance

The song 'Jerusalema' became last year a symbol of the fight against covid-19. It was through an Angolan choreography that the South African melody became an anthem and spread joy and good mood to the four corners of the world. Portugal was no exception, and even the city of Tarouca - in the district of Viseu - decided to adopt the music and choreography to boost and reinvent the practice of sports in the municipality, in times of pandemic.

'Jerusalema', a song by South African songwriter Nomcebo and producer Master KG, was released early last year. Sung in the 'Zulu' language, the songwriter proclaims Jerusalem, saying that this is her kingdom and her home, to the sound of contagious and joyful beats.

It was these beats that won over the Angolan group Fenómenos do Semba. The Angolans decided to create a choreography for the song and publish a video of their steps on the Internet. The choreography of the Angolans dancing with a plate of food in their hands went viral and reached the four corners of the world.

Portugal was no exception and decided to recreate the challenge, writes Observador. The municipality of Tarouca did not want to remain indifferent to the movement and, with the aim of reinventing the concept of physical exercise in the municipality, the municipality's Sports Department adapted the choreography under the slogan "Jerusalema Challenge".

"We needed to reinvent what sport is in the municipality, making sure that there wasn't any kind of gathering, following what were the recommendations of the Directorate-General of Health. In this sense, we thought that one way to reach people's homes was through video and our colleague said there was a funny one," Vítor Dourado told the Portuguese newspaper Jornal do Centro.

The '#jerusalemachallenge' became a viral phenomenon: employees of large supermarkets, companies, friends, policemen, firemen, doctors, among others, united in one voice to adapt and imitate the Angolan steps to the sound of 'Jerusalema', in a kind of joint force against covid-19.
