PGR seizes aircraft from BIC. Bank denies wrongdoing

The Attorney General of the Republic of Angola (PGR) apprehended, in the context of an investigation process for embezzlement and money laundering, an Air Force aircraft at the service of Banco BIC, but this denies any irregularities.

:

The aircraft in question was being used by BIC under a contract with the Angolan Air Force.

According to the arrest warrant, to which Lusa had access, "in the context of the property investigation process, due to evidence of the practice of crimes of embezzlement and money laundering, (...) the Director of the National Asset Recovery Service, Dr. Eduarda Rodrigues, under the terms (...) of the Law on Coercive Repatriation and Extended Loss of Assets, in conjunction with the (...) Regulatory Law for Magazines, Searches and Seizures, orders the Beechcraft Model aircraft to be seized B 350, under registration D2-EDU ".

The PGR also determines, in the warrant issued on Tuesday, that the National Air Force - FAN be the "faithful depositary" of the plane and asks the judicial, administrative, police and military authorities to "provide due assistance when requested" .

According to a statement by Banco Bic, issued this Wednesday, "it was with surprise and astonishment" that the Board of Directors of the financial institution, which had the biggest shareholder businesswoman Isabel dos Santos, became publicly aware of the seizure of the aircraft.

The bank guarantees that there was no "favor situation" on the part of the Angolan Air Force in the contract.

"There is no situation of favor on the part of the Angolan Air Force towards Banco BIC. The agreement was transparent and the terms of the contract were always fulfilled by both parties", assures the BIC.

"That aircraft was at the service of Banco BIC, supported by a contract signed with the Air Force's General Staff, since 2010, and today sent to Mrs. Director of the National Asset Recovery Service, along with other documentation of proof of that there is no illegality or abuse or misuse of the plane ", he stresses.

Also according to the statement, Beechcraft "was inoperative in the hangar of the company Helliang, at Luanda airport, in need of major repair" and, in 2010, BIC proposed the repair of the plane and "paid directly, with the workshops Repairs in South Africa, all expenses in excess of USD 1,100,000.00 plus USD 550,000.00 of maintenance ".

In the note, the bank also clarifies that "it pays USD 25,000.00 monthly as income for the use of the aircraft, which is deductible on the advance investment made by BIC, and which exceeded USD 1,600,000.00", that is, about 1.3 million.

The bank, which has 321 branches spread across the 18 provinces, says that it collects and replenishes values and provides various logistical support, by air and land, expressing, therefore, the interest in contracting with the Angolan Air Force the use of of that plane.
