First case of coronavirus confirmed in sub-Saharan Africa

The first case of coronavirus in sub-Saharan Africa was confirmed this Friday. The case was identified in Nigeria, but the World Health Organization (WHO) has already alerted countries that do not yet have any confirmed cases to prepare for the possible arrival of the virus.

After cases have been confirmed in the last few days in the north of Africa, more specifically in Egypt and Algeria, this Friday the news arrives from sub-Saharan Africa, with the confirmation of a case in Nigeria.

The coronavirus arrived in Nigeria through an Italian citizen who returned from Milan on 25 February. According to the Nigerian Ministry of Health, the man was admitted to a hospital in the state of Lagos after the test was positive.

The guardian of that country also said the man was "in a stable clinical condition".

The news raised the concern of the WHO, which has already warned other countries that have not yet registered any positive cases of coronavirus that the arrival of the virus is close: "All countries must be ready for the first case, the first outbreak, the first evidence of community transmission and to deal with sustained community transmission. These are four scenarios. One must be prepared for all these scenarios at the same time. No country should assume that it will not have cases, that can be a fatal mistake," said the WHO Director-General.
