Cholera cases soar over the weekend to 952 and seven more deaths

Cholera cases in Angola soared this Saturday, with 169 notifications and seven more deaths, totaling 952 cases and 42 deaths since the beginning of the outbreak, now five provinces, according to official data.

According to the latest bulletin from the Ministry of Health, of the 169 new cases, 129 occurred in the province of Luanda, 26 in the province of Icolo and Bengo, 12 in Bengo, one in Huambo and one in Huíla, with no records so far.

The municipality of Cacucaco, in Luanda, is the epicenter of the outbreak and accounts for 115 of the new cases reported.

Seven more deaths were recorded and 122 people are hospitalized with cholera.

There have been 42 deaths since the beginning of the outbreak, 30 of which were in Luanda province, according to the same source.

The age group most affected by the disease is 2 to 9 years old with 244 cases and 14 deaths, followed by children and young people aged 10 to 19 years old with 241 cases and five deaths.

The ministry urges people with symptoms of liquid diarrhea and vomiting to immediately seek a nearby cholera treatment center or health unit, drink boiled or treated water with five drops of bleach, and prepare homemade serum (one liter of boiled or treated water). with two tablespoons of sugar and one teaspoon of salt).

Cholera is a disease associated with poor sanitation and water supply and poor hygiene conditions.
