CAN2023: Angola, Burkina Faso and Mali closer to the round of 16

Angola beat Mauritania 3-2 this Saturday and will fight for a place in the round of 16 of the African Football Cup of Nations (CAN) with Burkina Faso, who allowed Algeria a late 2-2 draw.

With two goals from former Sporting and Rio Ave player Gelson Dala, in the 30th and 50th minutes, and one from Gilberto, in the 53rd minute, the 'palancas negra' took command of Group D, with the same four points as Burkina Faso.

Pedro Soares Gonçalves' pupils still suffered, with goals from Sidi Bouna Amar, at 43, and Aboubakary Koita's 'bomb', at 58, however, Angola held on to the three points.

Finalists defeated by Nigeria in 2013, the 'stallions' were twice in front and thus had a foot in the 'eighth', if not for Baghdad Bounedjah, who 'scored twice', rescuing a point in extra time for Algeria, who now have two and, while facing Mauritania, they will 'play' with the clash between their rivals.

The Algerian striker, who represents Al-Sadd, from Qatar, kept the 'desert warriors', winners in 1990 and 2019, linked to hope with goals in the 51st and 90+5, after the rival had been in command twice, with accurate shots from Mohamed Konate, at 45+3, and Bertrand Traore, at 71, from a penalty.

The first two in each group and the four best third-place teams advance to the round of 16.

In Group E, Lassine Sinayoko advanced Mali, finalists in 1972, in the 10th minute, however, in the 20th minute, Hamza Rafia had already equalized for Tunisia, who won the CAN in 2004.

The equality left Mali in the lead, with four points, followed by Namibia, which, on Sunday, faces South Africa, with zero points, while Tunisia is third, with just one point.

So far, there are only two teams guaranteed a place in the round of 16 of the CAN, namely Cape Verde, which secured first place in Group B, and Senegal, the defending champion, who commands 'pool' C.
