Angola faces Mauritania this Saturday. Pedro Gonçalves wants “versatile” players

The national football team faces its counterpart from Mauritania on the field this Saturday, in a game counting for the group stage of the African Cup of Nations (CAN2023), which is taking place in Côte d'Ivoire. In preview of the match, national coach Pedro Gonçalves said that he wants “versatile” players, which is one of the aspects that has been worked on.

According to Pedro Gonçalves, versatility will help the team adapt to various possible scenarios.

"The football game is random by nature and there is a wide variety of behaviors and events that are not predictable. We have to be versatile to adapt", said the coach, in statements at a press conference, cited by Angop.

In the sights of the Angolans, according to Pedro Gonçalves, is victory. On the occasion, the coach recalled that the game with Mauritania will present different circumstances to those of the opening match, where Angola drew with Algeria, however, he reiterated that the goal remains the same: to win.

Remembering that the team has 23 players and four other substitutes, the coach, who said he has confidence in all the athletes, stated that the starting eleven depends on the strategy of each game depending on the particularity of the opponent.

Still in the preview of the match – scheduled for 5pm local time (6pm in Angola), this Saturday –, the coach recognized that the opposing team is capable of creating difficulties, especially from a physical angle, speed and attack with explosive players with shooting power, writes Angop.

In CAN, Angola belongs to group D, also made up of the teams from Burkina Faso, Algeria and Mauritania. In their debut in the competition, the national team drew, by an even ball, with Algeria.

After its first game, Angola continued its preparation, with Pedro Gonçalves giving his 200th training session to the national team this Thursday (18 January).

Among the Portuguese-speaking teams that are present in the African tournament, Cape Verde's passage to the next phase stands out, after beating the Mozambique team this Friday.
